Now that I've got at least one of each army box I thought it would be neat to try to come up with a bunch of 1000-point starter lists for quick games. That way, I can also have 2000 point games by facing off the dwarfs and elves against the abyssals and the undead. So far I've just had a couple of small games with the contents of Morgoths but really want to get going with bigger ones. My gaming group does a lot of big multiplayer games as well, so it'd be neat to try out a 4-player intro game once I've got everything painted.

In all cases, I'm restricting things so that the list has to be made from just the contents of an army box and a character pack.

Had to expand that to 2 army boxes and a character pack for the abyssals since they're the only set that isn't capable of hitting 1000 points on it's own. I'm impressed that the other three were able to hit 1000 points without too many problems (the undead list was a bit of a stretch though).

The goal of these lists isn't to be all-out competitive, but I am looking to have a reasonable level of balance between them so that one list won't completely flatten another list all the time.

Looks like a good start.  Take it you included the Mhorgoth's Revenge models too?

The Abyssals might have a bit of an advantage, being that they have a Horde unit, although it may be tempered by the fact they have no magic.

Nope, no Morgoth's Revenge models included for the purposes of these lists.

I do have 4 boxes of Morgoths, but I just wanted to see if it was possible to take the contents of a plain mantic army box + character pack and get a good working 1000-point list out of it. Mostly so I can promote it more easily.

General idea is that I want to step up my demo games to 1000 points and try and get more people interested in picking up a KoW army.

It'll be a lot easier to do that if I can point at the army, and say.. "this lot cost me 50 quid and is 1000 points, it's just an army box and a pack of characters".

Should give a bit of focus to the painting I've penciled in for the big chunk of time off I've got in the summer, too, if I can paint up only what's in the small lists first and worry about the rest of it later.

If the Abssyals need a little toning down I'll see about splitting the horde into a couple of regiments.

You will probably need to use two boxes for the Orcs as well - given what we know is in the forthcoming army set:

Axe Horde (Standard & Musician) 195
Greataxe Half Regiment (Standard & Musician) 80
Gore Rider Regiment (Standard & Musician) 180
Krudger on Gore with Goblin Sneek 155
Flagger 30

+2 Orcling Stands (unknown)

I make that 640 before you add in the Orclings, although you could probably up the points a bit by splitting the Greatax and/or Gore Riders into smaller units.

All of these lists are a stretch to some extent, particularly the undead.

It's an exercise in seeing if it's possible to get a playable army, without any thought for "optimal", not that any of the armies posted above are particularly poor either.

Kings of War is nicely balanced like that, even if your list is just random stuff you still have a fair chance at winning.

Orcs definitely aren't possible at the moment, but we'll see what their updated list brings.

I can stretch the list to 740 + orclings, but that's as far as it goes. If mantic release a warhost as well at some point I might try and make one out of a pair of those.

D'Oh! - my bad: its actually 20 Greataxe you get, rather than 10 (serves me right for using the blog entry not the shop listing!)

If you run the greatax as a regiment for +60 points you could probably do it just by adding another Ax horde or another greatax regiment once you add the orclings (since that will probably give you enough for another stand of them). Still more for the starter army than elves, dwarfs, or undead, but not as bad as the Abyssals.
