Just out of curiousity, how many people does Orky have working for him on a daily basis?  We don't need to count the dragooned labor of the migrants from Scotland.

6-12 or so full-timers.

And a massive great big list of freelancers.

Is this one a hard worker or a nerd layabout hoping to scam some free miniatures?

Ah, cool, it looked like he was hired on a more permanent basis, judging from the fact that he seems to be having to deal with 100% of the Kickstarter admin.

I might see if I can place a personal bet on the company rapidly expanding to the point where it needs full-time creative staff rather than freelancers and prepare for that by doing some fan art. My freelance work in the web games market is starting to dry up and was never all that stable to start with so anything is an option currently.

I'm quite a big fan of the more "painterly" style used in the original Kopinski artwork.. stuff like the elf/ undead artwork has quite a light, fantastical feel to it like it belongs in a story book. Whereas the later stuff is more polished and "hard" with sharp reflections, defined edges and strong contrast lighting.. more of a modern style that makes good use of digital painting by using it to do the stuff that was previously really difficult in other media. Both are extremely good, but I like the more "ethereal" approach for fantasy that appears more than a little bit detached from our own reality... the purple magic flowing through all the of the undead in the first Kopinski undead artwork is great, and I love how the skeletons all have glowing eyes whereas the necromancer controlling them has a blank mask.. it makes it clear that the skeletons are an extension of their master's will, and that he sees using their eyes.

I really like a lot of the smaller black and white sketches from Mantic too, but they need some extra cross-hatch or line shading to really make them pop... or even better - black pen + watercolour for a proper mid-80's dark fantasy artwork feel... I love stuff like Brian Froud's work (lead concept artist for Labyrinth), along with the whole fairytale style.

6th edition beastmen book from GW was just plain wonderful and filled with a real "things that lurk in the woods" atmosphere, supported by both the artwork, layout and background text. I liked the more individual styles that the book layouts had back then.

I might do some orcs... big landscape pieces over cold windswept plains to get across their isolation in the wilderness, maybe with a glowing city in the distance that a horde of orcs is marching towards... stuff like that can tell a story much better than a plain "this big dude with a hammer is fighting this big dude with a sword" style pieces.. although there have been some extremely well-done examples of art that is exactly that - the cover of Codex:Armageddon is probably my favourite piece of GW art simply because of the composition and how small the human looks compared to the gigantic ork, but is still stepping up to fight it in an act of extreme bravery.

My favourite parts of the fate of the forgestar box aren't in the foreground at all, they're the little trails of fighter jets in the distance and tiny specks of explosions that hint at an absolutely titanic battle raging that is lost amongst the massive moonscape.

I'd say that point has been reached, at least for sculpting.

Mainly because one of the guys I wanted to hire is working full time for Mantic, and Ronnie won't let me have him. Smiley
