So I met up with some guys who are into KoW at one of the local shops.

Unfortunately 2 of the 3 of them already have Orcs. The other has dwarves.

Orcs were my first choices, but elves were a close second.

What do you recommend I buy heavily into? Archers? I assume Elves are an archer heavy army.

I don't really know, as I don't play elves, but I wanted to say congrats on finding a group of that size. Sounds good.

You could always look into the armies that they have no models for yet and see what you think about them...

Elves are a good choice - especially with them being in the sale at the moment.

Elven shooting is good but you will need some combat units too. Soften things up with missile fire and then pounce with a combat unit or two to break them.

Here is a 1500 point list I took to the Mantic Invitational with some success:-

Spearmen Regiment (20), Banner + Musician
Spearmen Regiment (20), Banner + Musician
Spearmen Regiment (10)

Palace Guard Regiment (20), Banner + Musician
Palace Guard Half Regiment (10), Banner + Musician

Bowmen Troop (10)
Bowmen Troop (10)

Scout Troop (10)

Stormwind Cavalry Regiment (10), Banner + Musician
Stormwind Cavalry Troop (5), Banner + Musician

Bolt Thrower (1)
Bolt Thrower (1)

Army Standard Bearer (1)

Mage-Queen (1+pet) Sabre-Toothed Pussycat

Total:1500 points

I'd say that at 1500 points you want to be looking at 2 bolt throwers and at least 2-3 bowmen troops. After that you can think about infantry blocks. I usually go with a spearman horde and 2 regiments of palace guard. I think if you are going to take cavalry, a regiment is a good choice rather than a troop.

Archers are good to have, and still pretty handy in combat.  But the elves have really solid troops and the extra movement let's you start most fights which puts you at an advantage.  All in all, they're a very forgiving army.

I have to say that the more I'm painting elves the more I like them. In fact, I think I'm secretly trying to justify buying the Dragon to myself.

I reckon that bolt throwers are over pointed when you can take scouts. I'd second Matt's point about Cavalry, the troops are just too damned fragile. However, I would consider Drakons rather than Stormwinds.

Thanks all.

99% of everything I play video games, board games, card games or minis games has always been just straight up smash mouth type tactics. Not a lot of strategy to it, but I love it.

So Elves tactics is not exactly new to me, it is just not my forte.

I will be starting a Human Kingdom (that is the correct name... right?) army when they are released. I am interested in what their theme will look like.

Crusaders... maybe?

The group I play with bought the KoW minis for WHFB. But they alternate between rules. WHFB offers a more detailed game for them.

KoW offers the quick fun play.

40K was king around here, though many people still love the game and still play the game with their existing collection, purchase has gone down hill.

Games like Firestorm Armada, Uncharted Seas, Dystopian Wars, Malifaux are now taking over some of the 40K shelves.

Many of the guys are now married or having kids and just can't justify the cost of 40K when they have a baby, which is a lot more expensive than 0K.

For the price of a storm raven I can get a Spartan Games starter fleet and a carrier or another big ship blister.

It's just a matter of economics and life's responsibilities.

I wouldn't say forgiving, flexible maybe but not forgiving. They are a glass hammer - get things wrong and your troops will evaporate like the morning mist.

I have some drakon riders on my workbench at this very moment.  Wink

I've had friends who are often just a bit short of tactical morons play them and do quite well.  Of course, I've seen them play them really badly and watched them evaporate too.  But I think if you are moderately skilled, you can do a lot with them.  They've got great shooting units that are also quite good in melee -- charging across to them doesn't net you much.  Smartly-played elves are really tough.

I definately recommend the Drakon riders. Really nice models to paint and very flexible on the battlefield. Lucy fielded one against my Undead the other night and I focused a lot of troops towards killing it, weakening my attack in the centre.

That blue scheme really looks good on that model.

So how many points would you recommend of Cavalry in a 2500 pt army?

I'm thinking 600-800ish

Minimum 2 regiment sized units I'd say.
