Just curious why it was? Without going into a doom n gloom scare.
Perhaps an online journal (pdf) would be more efficient?

You've pretty much hit the nail on the head. The Journal was always a promotional item for Mantic to raise their profile in the gaming community. However it was also a drain on Mantics resources, which as a still small company they have precious little of, both in terms of manpower and finances.
With Mantic now having established itself with the online community, on sites like this one and others, those resources are really better spent elsewhere.
Still sorry to see it go though.

It's not just that, they have a lot of printing that needs doing next year with 5 rules booklets needing to be made next year for mantic's games, and it was decided that their current print people/ resources would be best off spent polishing those to a high standard rather than spreading themselves too thin by doing the books and the journal.

It would be great to see the Mantic Journal resurrected in some form - I loved the fact it was not pretentious, was full of good articles and ads for stuff I can see myself buying - just what I wanted really.
Maybe we can put together a fanzine - any offers of an article?

I think short stories could be done (JP might be up for that). I can do batreps.
New Scenarios for all the games would be nice.

I'll write up an article about Warforge when it launches and a monthly update of the best contributions.

I'd be very happy to do artwork for any fanzine (especially if it's a proper landscape-format webzine).

Cool! I've been thinking about background for Mantica - have come up with a basic theme which allows for more Abyssal stuff in the future - will try and get it typed up and posted!
