As historical minis are traditionally cheaper than 'fantasy', I'm looking at building a kingdom of men army from imperial or caesarian roman minis.  The only concern is the lack of black powder weapons available. I was considering using a balista (large siege crossbow) as a 'counts as a cannon' ; and hope my opponent doesn't object too much!

You could do that, or ally them with a solid unit of elven palace guard to represent praetorians, and then buy a bolt thrower to represent your scorpion.

That black powder stuff is a passing fancy.  It will never catch on!

You could always mix histories and fiction and say that small cannon were brought by Chinese traders.

I'm not wanting to take over this treat, but i was thinking pretty much the same, about using
roman miniatures for the human army.

my "local" shop sells warlord games imperial romans, anyone know how they compare to
the mantic models, as both are 28mm, it should just fit fine.

cheers

Im stocking them this week and displaying and using my romans in store. Why not have Romans vs Undead/Orcs or Elves. They kick ass in war let them have them.

I quite like this idea...especially if you used Celts or other Ancients for Militia or Penitents.

A wee browse on the Warlord website would suggest...

Foot Guard - Praetorians, Veterans with Embossed Scutums (to reflect great fighting powers)
Shield Wall - Testudo, Legionaries, Auxilaries
Spear Phalanx - Marines, Auxilaries
Missile Blocks - Archers
Knights - Praetorian Calvary
Mounted Sergents - Roman Calvary, Auxilary Calvary, Celtic Calvary
Mounted Scouts - Camel Riders, Auxilary Calvary
Militia - Celtic Warriors
Penitents - Naked Celtic Fanatics

Heroes will be easy - Warmachines and Orges not so much!

War machines?  Use the ballista or onager as trebuchet.   Or you could cheat and use a cannon or two.  It's KoW, not historical gaming.  Your humans just happen to dress like Romans...

I think a combo of plastic legions and these  minis. http://www.miniaturedesignstudio.co.uk/berber-archers-305-c.asp

Should create a rather good looking mid/late 2nd C AD roman army with north African allies.  And 50 archers for £25 seems a bit of a bargain too Smiley
