1000 point undead list

Just thinking out a provisional list for the painting challenge which is mostly based on what I would like to paint, and wondered about it's actual battle-worthiness/legality

here goes:

Standard Bearer (25)

Balefire Catapult (70)

Skeleton Archer Troop (45)
Skeleton Horde plus command (185)

Revenant Regiment plus command (130)

Ghoul Regiment (80)

Wraiths (125)

Well, it's definately legal which is a good start.

I haven't played enough games to get a real sense of what's battle worthy, but here's my thoughts based on few games I've got under my belt.

Your liche king is going to have to a lot of heavy lifting in this list. I'd prefer to have a coule of charachters with dark surge personally. Otherwise you're infantry are likely to get very shot up as they cross the board. Your may have enough fast units to deal with those threats though.

 Balefire catapults are ok by themselves, but much better in pairs. Your skeleton archers are going to do much damage, but should be a good counter attack unit for anything trying to get to your catapult.

In theory it's well worth taking rat/dogs for your skellie horde. In practice that unit's been taken out by fire bezerkers before it's seen action. My advice is to avoid bezerkers like the plague.

Don't know if any of that's helpful. In the end I think the rules are flexible enough that you should be able to win with any basic list, but I'd consider painting up an extra necromancer or two as a cheap an easy way to add a bit more flexability.

Agreed with War_Grub - with only the Liche King able to use Dark Surge, one of your units will get left behind. Considering he gets a load more dice than usual to cast DS with, your Ghouls can "At the double" 12", Wraiths can fly and you've got 2 cool units of cavalry, this list is generally pretty quick for an Undead army! I would be inclined to say leave the shooting at home and steal yourself a necromancer then if you look into expanding to 1500, then bring in a pair of catapults and some archers if that's what you want

Well, modified it slightly, lost the cat and the archers for a Rev king Mostly on real money cost grounds tbh, I'll pick up the snacky pretty models later, and who know? maybe by that time they'll do all plastic archers.

Skeleton Horde + Standard and Musician = 185

Revenant Regiment = 105

Wraiths = 125

Ghoul Regiment = 80

Revenant Cavalry troop + Musician = 90
Revenant Cavalry troop + Musician = 90

Revenant King = 120
Liche King = 180
Standard = 25

= 1000 points
= 98 figs.

(thought about having a necromancer, but decided that any self-respecting Liche wouldn't want living wizards hanging around his army! )

Drop the archers and invest in spears and rat/dogs for your Horde.  Even if it comes under fire on the way across the table, it'll make it back when it gets into combat.


I see Skeleton Phalanx Hordes as an essential purchase for an Undead list.

(it's 5 to much, I know. but we don't care aoubt 5 pts - maybe, net time its 15 less...)

Cons: no ranged combat, just one model with dark surge, just one unit for guarding my flanks
Pros:  looks inpressive. 142 modells.

I'd like to add a balefire catapult, but I don't own one. Maybe getting my gobbo catapult, and giving it a skeleton crew. But were to get the points from?

My opposition will be Lizzardmen.

You could always drop one of your hordes, you'd still have 4 units on the table.  I'm not a fan of Ghoul Troops, they may be fast, but a good round of shooting, sometimes even a lacklustre round of shooting will see them off...
