Highs:
Painting up my elves.  The scouts are generally regarded as the weakest of the elf line and I thoroughly enjoyed painting them.
Corporation concept art and sculpt pictures.  They look fantastic.
Rules: Dwarf Kings Hold.  A fantastic little skirmish game inside of a dungeon.  Simple rules yet complex play.
News of Pandora.  I like Dwarf Kings Hold, so I'm definitely excited about the sci-fi version.

Lows:
Rules:  I hate it when rules devalue my miniatures.  Both Warpath and Kings of War are all about huge armies where the individual trooper doesn't matter.  They are effectively element based rules like Hordes of the Things or Future War Commander but with larger elements for Kings of War and a dispersed element on multiple bases for Warpath.  You don't even have the utility of wound marking with individual miniatures via figure removal.  At this point I am strongly reconsidering expanding my elves into a playable force and have taken Fate of the Forgestar off my "to buy" list.

So I may end up being "that Dwarf Kings Hold guy" around these parts.  As for the idea of a fantasy version and I sci-fi version, there's only really one way to express how I feel about that:

3  Non Mantic Mayhem / Non Mantic Mini Discussion / Re: Nova Corp. - Reapers SciFi mini's. on: December 31, 2011, 11:14:06 pm
I bought these guys for some sci-fi RPG play.  They're solid.  Reaper has always been good for individual models for your characters for fantasy and their Chronoscope line is really varied.  I got some zombie hunters and every time I'm in the local store, I get tempted by the zombie with a chainsaw.

Microlite20!

I have my entire Microlite20! GM kit in a recipe card box.  Every character sheet and all the rules each fit on a 3x5 inch recipe card.  And there's even room for dice.

As for testing out a full game of KoW, remember you can always make cardboard stands the size of the troops/regiments/hordes and label them (or stick less miniatures on them) so you can tell what they are.  It doesn't look nearly as cool as a big base full of miniatures, but it's a stop gap until you get the armies built.

The gunner's pose seems to be the same legs and torso as the spotter with different arms (and a different head) attached.  I don't think it'll look as akward in anything other than a side profile shot.  They probably should have done a 45 degree angle from the front picture for that one.

So it's one of those strange "pictures must be in their proper place" things like when they closed the mantic picture thread.

I don't quite understand why the scythes have flail heads attached to them.  That would make them terribly ineffective.  Cut those off and those miniatures aren't awful, just expensive.

One quid a model is really, really good.  Even if the 10 man troop boxes end up at less than 20 quid I'll be happy.

Here's hoping individual squads of 10 will be priced close to the wraiths made of the same material.

They removed product pictures?  WTF for?   Even unauthorized pictures of upcoming products are specifically protected as journalism in pretty much every country on the planet.

Warseer moderators have brain fungus making them act irrationally.  It's the only explanation.

Dakka doesn't have a dumb policy like that:

9  Kings of War / Game Rules / Re: Some Skirmish Game Rules for Playtesting on: December 25, 2011, 06:13:51 am
Do you think the Kings of War turn order is ideal for this game?  Just to keep the contained turns feel?

I think a horde per 1000 or fraction thereof is a great way to have a solid battle line.  They actually become even more effective on terrain heavy tables as you can anchor flanks.  I played a proxy 1500 point game and my friend took 3 fully kitted ironguard hordes.  I had no hordes as I had taken a lot of regiments as I wanted to try out as many different things in the list as possible.  It sort of worked, but in the end, I just couldn't break the hordes and they captured more of the objectives out of sheer weight.

They really do pay a lot for being archers with a phalanx ability, don't they?

How are you building your seaguard?  Just taking equal parts bow and spear miniatures and then making alternating lines of each?  Or are you actually mixing archer and spearmen parts?  So far I've only put my scouts together so I haven't had the opportunity to make any other elf unit so far.
12  Kings of War / Game Rules / Re: Some Skirmish Game Rules for Playtesting on: December 24, 2011, 07:23:37 pm
I just realized just how few things actually end up with fractional/potential attacks.  Unless someone loads up on them, the extra die roll here and there isn't going to be a speed issue.

I'm still editing the document (it's entirely point form with no real explanatory text right now).  When I get it to he point where someone could read it and play without me being there to explain, I'll definitely share it.

2mm would be really cool.  I used to do 6mm historicals a lot, but I just kept finidng myself drifting back to 1/72 plastics.  They have a pleasing charm and most have very realistic proportions.  Probably why I like mantic elves so much!

I'm guessing the filter was designed by my fellow colonials.  **** isn't that offensive, just a bit crass.  Now ****, that's an offensive term for the same thing here.

I've been getting the impression you want a minimum of a horde per 1000 points, sometimes more.  But you'd have to drop two bowman regiments for the extra 180 points to increase the seaguard from a regiment to a hoard.

Not sure it's worth it.   I think you've got it figured out already.

I love the idea of the cat whisperer's swarm.
