1  Kings of War / Abyssal Dwarfs / Re: Abyssal Dwarves minis on: June 02, 2011, 02:48:51 am
I have not had any major problems with them the core troops are mostly plastic with metal hats, heads, weapons and shield bosses which are fairly easy to assemble all thinks considered.

The elite troops are mostly all metal (the hybrids in particular have a fair bit of weight to them) while the Immortals use a metal torso on plastic legs. I have not assembled any Immortals yet but I imagine the short wide set frame of the dwarfs will reduce any stability issues.

They are more work to assemble than the "mainline" plastic ranges but are not anything too difficult overall and I like the level of detail on the miniatures.

If you have not seen the Rankings HQ review I would recommend it for a better look at some of the sets.

2  General Category / General Discussion / Re: What do you think the theme of the human army will be? on: May 31, 2011, 11:44:52 pm
Another take on an Atlantean theme could perhaps be something darker...

When I think fishmen my mind turns to Lovecraft, a human army in the service of some eldritch abomination might be interesting...

Cultist infantry and cavalry supported by deep one-esque fishmen and ancient horrors from the depths of the sea could be interesting and might appeal to horror RPG fans as well as wargamers.

Not a problem gaarew, glad I could help and I agree the possibilities are endless for a striking "counts as" centerpiece (I quite liked the Juza one myself...)

Marlowe, I was thinking of picking up the base myself actually, I can think of a few uses for it...

If going that route you might want to look around the dwarf section of the scibor site, some of those sculpts look brilliant for guards or a smith and would fit well with the base I think. I must say I am impressed with most of the line, I think I will have to pick up some of the dwarfs and mosculs (could use as chaos dwarfs):

who would not want a king on warbear (and it seems that there are more warbears in the works)?

of course some sculpts are just blasphemous  Wink :

Well that is a bit of a challenge....

Alright Mirliton has a smithy with an anvil but you would have to buy the whole thing just for the anvil....

http://www.mirliton.it/product_info.php?pName=smith-workshop&cName=historical-2528mm-diorama-kits

Mega minis, on the other hand, makes a blacksmiths shop with pieces that can be bought individually. The link is to their catalog, (they have a store on ebay) page 7 has the blacksmith tools. My first concern is it might be a bit small but then the Hasslefree minis are slightly smaller as well so it might work.

http://www.megaminis.com/MEGA/CATALOGS/MegaMinis-DUNGEONDECORcatalog.pdf

Foundry miniatures has a blacksmith set in the civil war collection with an anvil as well:

http://wargamesfoundry.com/historical_ranges/single_packs/english_civil_war/british/blacksmith_ecw005/

There are a fair number of standard miniature anvils ranging from toys to tools for jewelry making; one example of a model anvil:

http://www.reindeerpass.com/anvilhammerandtongs.aspx

Now these are all rather plain and might not look as nice as GW's so a dramatic dwarven base might be necessary to give the unit a more imposing profile, for example:

http://www.sciborminiatures.com/en_,shop.php?art=732

or...

http://www.sciborminiatures.com/en_,shop.php?art=865

There are also a few dwarf minis with anvils built in, if you were thinking of going that route...

http://juza-miniaturas.blogspot.com/

Of course the best route might be conversion or to scratch build one....

5  Kings of War / Dwarfs / Re: Two-handed dwarves on: October 22, 2010, 10:51:04 pm
And here is your answer:

They seem to be called shieldbreakers; the following is from today's Mantic newsletter:

"The Dwarf Army Set presents a great way of getting the rules if you know which army it is you want to collect. Containing  40 Ironclad Warriors, 30 Ironwatch, 2 Ironbelcher Cannon/Organ Gun kits and 15 Shieldbreakers, not only does this set contain our newest and yet-to-be-released plastic kit, but it also forms a solid foundation of any Dwarven contingent. Of course, it’s still not quite big enough an army for us!

The Dwarf Shieldbreakers are a new plastic kit designed to let you build units of Dwarfs with two handed weapons. In game terms these guys are your can-openers, able to dish out a lot of damage with their Crushing Strength special rule – they also make a fine unit to paint up as well! The Shieldbreakers will be available in both a 10-man troop and 20-man (with Command) regiment sets.

The Dwarf Shieldbreakers will begin shipping on the 29th November but, if you want to get these fantastic new figures earlier, the Dwarf Army Set is definitely the way to go!"
