Title: Kings of War & Warpath for Battlescribe project (Warpath 2.0 complete!)
Post by: scarletsquig on April 24, 2011, 03:23:58 pm
I'm making files to use with Battlescribe (http://www.battlescribe.net/), which is free army builder software that works on Windows, Mac, Linux and Android.

Thankfully mantic releases their army lists for free, making it nice and easy for me to go ahead and do this without any legal problems. I might even email the end result to them once the project is complete and error-free.

Here's a screenshot for anyone who isn't familiar with the software, just to show how awesome it is:

How to get started:

- Download the latest version of Battlescribe from: http://battlescribe.net/ (http://battlescribe.net/)
- Open "Roster Editor" once you've installed it.
- Go to File > Data Repositories in Roster Editor, copy + paste the link below, click add, and then select it and click update.

Code:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/27484619/index.xml

If successful, Battlescribe will download all the files from the repository, along with applying updates to existing files if a newer version exists on the server.

So, whenever you want to update files to the latest version of the army list, all it takes is a single click... just click "update" again, and you're sorted.

Enjoy!

Update: WorkbenchManiac is working on some of the fan-lists, links are below:

Great idea!

But I seem unable to download any of the files from filedropper. Would it be possible to host the files elsewhere?

EDIT: Nevermind, it works. No idea why it didnīt before, but now itīs fine.

Just had a quick look and seems fine!  Will have a good play with it later.

Good to hear, the other options that aren't filedropper are horrible and have ads and make you enter captchas and wait 30 seconds.

I've fixed a few things with the current list, nothing major, just changed the bowmen horde and regiment into solid units and changed the order that looks better. I'll do another upload later.. for now I'm gonna crack on and see if I can get the undead done today too.

Okay, Undead list is now up as well.

I'm gonna call it a day for now, but I'm getting these knocked out much quickly than I expected. Should be able to get them all done by the end of the week... including the orc beta. :)

Download away and let me know if you find any errors, a proof-read can easily be done by making a roster with one of each unit, clicking "view roster" than comparing the stats with the original mantic .pdfs.

The "view roster" output seems to have the annoying habit of showing duplicated special rules, not sure if that can be changed, but it is at least possible to remove that section entirely just by deselecting rules summary from the options after clicking on view roster.

"Units" are all the infantry and cavalry units with less than 20 infantry or 10 cavalry, so that I was able to add an auto-checker for the "3 solid units for every 1 war engine/ hero/ monster" rule.

Did I miss something?  Isn't it 1 hero/monster/war engine per solid unit?

Still, looks good dude, gonna download this for sure.

Unless I am being stupid... I think Wraiths are missing from the Undead list...

True. That's what I meant, but not what I said. Also, in addition it's 1 hero/monster and 1 war engine for every solid unit so I've already gone back and fixed that.

Yeah, totally missed those, will add them in sometime.

Ah, oops. After checking the KoW rules it turns out I completely got that rule wrong *again*.

Fixed and re-uploaded the game system file, it's now checking correctly for "1 solid unit unlocks 1 war engine and 1 hero/monster".

Just delete the old Undead.cat file from the catalogues folder, and replace it with the new one.

I won't even pretend to have a clue what's going on there.. you might need to delete the whole thing and re-install or just use the jar file straight from the folder until I've got these files out of beta.

Not sure why running it from the start menu wouldn't be the same.. you don't have 2 different installs in different folders by any chance? Can't think what else it might be, other than windows just plain acting weird and refusing to accept that the file just isn't there anymore.

Awesome! I wasn't planning on also making/maintaining the fan-lists, so by all means go for it. I'll add any links to the first post.

It's quite easy to get new files made once you've got the hang of it. :)

I did not notice that Battlescribe allows to add stats and special rules as well... nice.

But now Iīll have to go over the file again... oh well.

Title: Re: Kings of War for Battlescribe project.
Post by: scarletsquig on April 25, 2011, 02:54:19 pm
Yep, if all I had to do was the point values I'd be done already... sorting out the stats, options and rules is what takes the time.

In other news, the amount of 2-handed weapon options in the abyssal dwarf list is proving a little tricky.. I've found a good way to deal with it (by attaching a new profile to the list when the upgrade is selected), but I'll have to go back and remove the skeleton archers entry (replacing it with a free bow upgrade for the skeletons) for consistency.

Quite interesting to note that there is nothing in the list stopping you from taking skeletons with both spears and bows for a sort of undead seaguard regiment.

Title: Re: Kings of War for Battlescribe project.
Post by: scarletsquig on April 25, 2011, 04:53:29 pm
New Update:

- Abyssal Dwarf List uploaded.
- Incorporated bows into the skeleton entry instead of having a seperate archer entry.

Just the orc beta list to finish off next, and this thing is done. :)

Edit: And that's a wrap!

Orc list uploaded, along with a custom .zip of Battlescribe containing all of the files already in place so it's much quicker to get up and running.

Job done until anyone notices an error or ommission.

Super work, Mr Squig.  Well done!

Job done until anyone notices an error or ommission.

The Orc Chariot and Fight Wagon Regiments should be solid units.  Not sure if the Ax Regiment should be as well...as Regiments usually are solid but these only have 15 troops  :-\

Title: Re: Kings of War for Battlescribe project (completed!)
Post by: scarletsquig on April 26, 2011, 07:43:54 am
^ That was one thing I carefully considered, and, under the current rules, they're not solid units.

Rules state that a unit of cavalry has to be at least 10-strong to count as solid, and the chariot/wagon regiments are labelled as Cavalry as their type and are only 6-strong.

Same goes for the Ax regiment, it's less than 20 so it's not solid.

It is a bit odd though, I agree, and makes it a bit difficult to get solid units for the orcs... might be worth raising the issue with mantic as part of the beta discussion.

Title: Re: Kings of War for Battlescribe project (completed!)
Post by: gaarew on April 26, 2011, 08:05:02 am
Large Cavalry rule states  3 models count as a solid unit.  So that applies to Chariots and Fight Wagon Troops and Regiments.

Ah, I completely missed the fact that the orc beta list has a second page. Thanks!

Fixed and uploaded (only for the individual orc beta file, not the big .zip pack, I'll remake that periodically while things are still being fixed).

Another annoying thing is the situation where special rules are being duplicated at the end of the roster, after you've made an army list and are viewing it... not something I can personally fix, but I'm talking to the battlescribe programmer about it. Until then, it's probably best to just not show the rules summary in the roster (can be disabled with options>show rule summary while viewing the roster). I've left the rules descriptions blank until this can be sorted out, because 10 repeated lines of "Shambling" or whatever looks even worse with the description being repeated each time.

did you get your error thing sorted out, gaarew?

Sorry to jump in and potentially derail the thread but besides it being free how does Battlescribe compare to Army Builder?
I have been using Army Builder a few years now but am always keen to save a buck on something that can do the job of replacing something that costs bucks.

So if someone can tell me it's good and does the job i'll back that one!

Title: Re: Kings of War for Battlescribe project (completed!)

Battlescribe does the same job, as far as I can tell. It's going through a bit of a transition at the moment since GW asked it to stop hosting any 40k/fantasy files earlier this month, but there's a plan B in place, which is to move to the same system that Army Builder uses, with Wolf Lair providing the software and the community providing the files to use with it. One of the big advantages it has over Army builder is that creating the army files is dead easy.. you don't have to do any programming or edit any text files. This whole thing for Kings of War has taken me about 6 hours, start to finish.

I'd recommend just downloading it and trying it out. It takes about 10 seconds to go ahead and do that with the link in my first post so you might as well. :)

Orc Flagga - doesn't have a check box for the gore option like the Krudger does.  It has a scrollable number option, meaning I can put my Flagga on 99 Gores.    :P

Title: Re: Kings of War for Battlescribe project (completed!)
Post by: scarletsquig on May 19, 2011, 02:59:27 pm
Ah, looks like filedropper doesn't keep them online forever.

Time for me to do that update I was meaning to sort out.

For now, download the latest version of battlescribe from their website, it has a new feature called data repositories.

Then, open up the Roster Editor, go to file>data repositorities, copy and past in the following URL and hit update:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/27484619/index.xml

That will automatically import all the files you need.

Edit: Also updated the first post, and made sure everything works.

Good lad!

Errrrr... not to throw a spanner in the works, but...

Don't you only really need two lists?

Good/Neutral

Evil/Neutral

(possibly Neutral as a stand alone for purists)

Because of the way the Allies system works?  I know it is kinda counter-intuative for most people who are building single-list armies, but it would facilitate things for those of us with bigger hordes that want to do more esoteric things.

 ;)

EDIT - posted here rather than warseer, so you can swear freely at me if need be.   :P

I'll be doing that as soon as I have all the new lists on my hands, no point going ahead with it before then!

Not going to reduce it down to just 2 lists though, that would be very unweildly if you do just want to create a single-faction list.

I'll have 10 lists, one for each race, and 2 others to catch all the Good/Evil variations. Battlescribe has also released some sort of funky way of making different types of force organization, so I might see if I can do it that way instead.

Warpath will be re-added once it's out of beta.

Is there a way to add allies in the Warpath rosters?  I couldn't seem to find it.

Title: Re: Kings of War & Warpath for Battlescribe project (Warpath 1st Edition complete!)
Post by: scarletsquig on December 08, 2011, 08:17:21 pm
There is currently no easy way of handling alliances currently I'm afraid, so you'll have to go about making 2 seperate rosters, one for the main force, and another for the allied contingent.

I could put all of the allied units into the army lists for each army, but this would be a nightmare to update whenever the lists get updated, and would also lead to a very bloated interface for people that aren't making allied lists (since you would have to pick out the units for the army out from amongst all of the allied units). Ideally, a solution for alliances will happen though the battlescribe software allowing you to combine lists, but that's out of my hands.

Turns out you can simply open the program again and run two windows of it, so I can monkey with allies simultaneously.

I found one mistyped data in the Ax Orcs in horde and regiment. Appears "Ra 6" instead "Ra -"
also I found that the Artillery  master don't have the horse option.

On the off-chance that anypony still reads this forum...

I've completed and uploaded all of the KoW 3.0 Warpath 2.0 datafiles. :)

You'll need to update Battlescribe to the latest version to make use of the files, which contain full descriptions for all rules, and profiles for all weapons.

Support for Allies has also been added in the latest version, and now works for both KoW and Warpath armies.

I'll have to check that out when I finally get time.  Once in a while I get a few minutes and keep glancing at the army section of the book, and thinking of at least 4 or 5 armies for each race that I want to try out.
