Title: Mantic Fantasy & General News & Rumour Roundup
Post by: Darsc Zacal on April 15, 2011, 12:17:37 am
I will be updating this thread on a regular basis. It is not meant to replace the other Mantic threads, but is intended to be a one stop read for those who don't have the time nor the inclination to search multiple threads.

These Mantic Fantasy and General rumours have been updated as of January 27th, 2012.

Recent updates are in Green. Sources are from a combination of contacts within Mantic, hobby industry insiders, video and online interviews, with the odd tidbit picked up from this and other forums, and Mantics own Newsletter and Website.

GENERAL MANTIC NEWS
-Thanks go to Warseer Admin Wintermute for pointing this bit of news out.

Hornby's Interim Management Statement and Trading Update (http://www.investegate.co.uk/Article.aspx?id=201201270700122608W)

"Hornby will distribute Mantic's "Kings of War" product range under our highly complementary Humbrol brand. In doing so we will enter the lucrative fantasy war gaming market, and provide a further vehicle for sales of our Humbrol paint ranges."

-Ronnie has stated that starting in 2012 it's Mantic's intention to alternate monthly releases between their systems, with a few surprises being thrown in of course.
-Mid to late 2012 will see the release of the big Kings of War rulebook. Likely to be done in hardcover. In addition to the core rules there will likely be additional rules, all the current army lists, possibly scenarios, and of course lots of coloured photos of Mantics mini's.
-Mantics latest Newsletter talks about some great, but very limited army deals on undead, dwarfs, and elves if anyone wants to expand or start their army.

http://www.manticgames.com/Shop-Home/Sale/Special-Army-Deals.html?utm_source=Mantic+Games+Newsletter&utm_campaign=9eb5f05a7c-Mantic_Games_Newsletter_130&utm_medium=email (http://www.manticgames.com/Shop-Home/Sale/Special-Army-Deals.html?utm_source=Mantic+Games+Newsletter&utm_campaign=9eb5f05a7c-Mantic_Games_Newsletter_130&utm_medium=email)

-Mantics store is now selling Renendra's Tombstone and Barrel sets.

http://www.manticgames.com/Shop-Home/Paints-and-Hobby/Scenery.html (http://www.manticgames.com/Shop-Home/Paints-and-Hobby/Scenery.html)

-There's also a great deal on a 10 mini set of Hasslefrees female combat soldier set as well as a hobby supply bag deal full of paints, brushes, dice and more. Check the Mantic store for prices and more details.

DWARF KING'S HOLD
(http://www.manticblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Ancient-Grudge.jpg)
- Ancient Grudge is the latest expansion for the Dwarf Kings Hold series of games.
- Introduces multiplayer rules, warbands, new races, and a couple new rooms to the game series.
- Because it is an expansion, and not a full game on it's own, you will also need one of the previous Dwarf Kings Hold sets to use this set.

ELVES

UNDEAD
-Ronnie has stated they'll be some new mini's out soon for a new undead unit that Alessio will be announcing shortly. No word yet on what the mini's will be, but speculation includes mounted wraiths, vampire infantry, werewolves, mummy's just to name a few. Lots of wishlisting regarding these.

DWARVES
-Ronnie has again stated that Dwarven Cavalry will eventually be released. No timeline given however.
-Ronnie also has mentioned them as mounted on Badgers... However I'm hoping this was a joke, as his fishmen and gerbil comments were.

ABYSSAL DWARFS
-Ronnie has confirmed restic releases for the Abyssal Dwarves for later this year. They will include restic halfbreeds while the other releases will be announced at a later date.

ORCS
-Rumours are that Orcs with bows will be coming out at a later date.

TWILIGHT KIN/EVIL NAUGHTY ELVES
(http://www.manticblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/assassin1.jpg)
- Concept art of the upcoming Twilight Kin Assassin.

(http://www.manticblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Mantic-Games-Twilight-Kin-Spearmen2.jpg)(http://www.manticblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Mantic-Games-Twilight-Kin-Crossbowmen-white1.jpg)(http://www.manticblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Mantic-Games-Twilight-Kin-Shadows.jpg)
-Above are some new better quality pics of the Twilight Kin.
-Twilight kin will have it's official release in February, but are already up for preorder in Mantics online store.

GOBLINS
(http://www.manticblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Mantic-Games-Kings-of-War-Goblins-on-Battlefield.jpg)(http://www.manticblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/Mantic-Games-Kings-of-War-Goblins.jpg)

-Pics of the new metal Goblins with Spears mini's.
-Ronnie has confirmed a plastic unit of goblin archers will be released later in the year.
-No release date given, but Ronnie has stated that the archers are currently away being tooled, so it's sounds like maybe a bit sooner than later.

HUMANS
-Indications are that Ronnie feels that humans are already well represented in the Fantasy market by other manufacturers plastic ranges. It sounds like there are no immediate plans for Mantic to put out their own.

Ronnie was heard to say during one of Mantics events last year, that after the Goblins and the Twilight Kin, there will be two new races. These will be non typical fantasy races created, or possibly re-imagined, by Mantic. Speculation on possible contenders are;

DEMONS
-Demons were mentioned for the first time at Mantics Open House. No further details on this possible army yet, although they might just exist as possible support units for the Twilight Kin army list.

OGRES
-Rumblings of Ogres from Mantic have been going on for quite a while now. Still nothing more than speculative rumblings at this point though.

That's it for now. Looks like Fantasy releases are starting to pick up some steam. Thanks for hanging in there Fanatics!

The drakons should have been Wyrms, since they have no fore arms/ claws.

And modeled sitting on slights recoiled tails like the new TK Necro Knights on the snakes.

Some fresh news from Mantic today regarding new Orc preorder army deals and some glimpses of new figures.

http://www.manticgames.com/Shop-Home/Orcs/Army-Deals.html

The larger deal includes the new Orc Cavalry and Goblin Maw handler with Maw. Both deals include the new Greatax sprues, as well as a just unveiled Orc Shaman mini.(still a wip)

There will also be an additional set of metal Morax heads included with both deals, although no pics of it were shown.

Dwarfs... With magic?!? What are Mantic trying to do?? :o

Actually, I'm open to the idea. Will be interesting to see if anything comes of it.

Straight from Ronnie during an RHQ-TV interview done during Salute.

The Wraiths have been resculpted. It wasn't planned, but the sculptor had been reworking them, Ronnie thought the new sculpts looked great, and so now will be cast in resin/plastic and released in about 2 months time.

Sounds like this'll make the first ones hard to find collector pieces now.

Actually I am highly excited about new Wraiths but am slightly miffed that I did not buy the originals from Mantic...

Cheers Darsc, Im a tad bit excited myself. And Ill be doing some freelance work for Mantic in the future, there are already ideas thrown around and projects discussed... exciting times indeed, cant wait to get started.

Regarding the open day: Oh boy, I wanna go. But Ill have to do some organizing first, drumming up people to share the trip with (and split the costs :P).

In that case I'd like to get my Want List in early on what I'd like to see you sculpt for Mantic. For brevity I'll keep it to dwarfs for now. :D

-Dwarf Rangers
-Dwarf Ironwatch (Both rifles and crossbows, based on the original artwork... Enough sculpts to complete a front rank of each)
-Dwarf Cavalry (Surprise us!)
-Dwarfs shooting a goblin out of a cannon (Just because)

I've got more on my list, but I know you've got that dragon cavalry to finish, so I'll leave the rest for now. ;)

Lol - we actually talked about a Dog mortar in addition to the throwing Mastiffs!

Indeed, congratulations on the model seeing a full on production. It is one of those cases where people (like myself) who have zero sculpting talent must just sit back and applaud. You nailed the artwork perfectly, glad I have never cashed any mantic points yet (last count 104).

So there are now reports... Okay A report, of the second Dwarf Kings Hold game, Elves vs Orcs, being on the retailers release schedule.

If it's just appeared on the retailers list this month, that would indicate it's planned for a July release. Just in time for GenCon. Assuming this news is accurate, that game along with the original DKH and Mantics yet to be unveiled SciFi title would make up the three game releases that Ronnie had promised us for this year.

Interesting.. thats different then what I heard at Adepticon, which was Dwarves VS Elves and Dwaves VS Orcs...

I always figured they would mash up the different armies in the DKH games. Elves versus Orcs should be interesting. Is it safe to assume that the game will be pretty much the same thing; good guys go barreling through some sort of stronghold to achieve objectives playing against a bad guy type guy?

Or any chance of 2 players on more or less even footing fighting it out?

Very cool. There is a new name a unit contest on the blog, for a new type of undead cavalry. I look forward to the WiP pics 'soon'.
Wonder whether they will be really heavy or light cavalry? The revenants seem more on the heavy side, but could be medium cav easily. It will be interesting to see how different the new ones are.

Hardly big news, but I just wanted to point out that sometime in the last month or so Mantic changed the photo of the Collector's resin base to a painted one, which I just noticed while stalking the site. I must say the work on it looks rather cool!

I did notice that. About time.

I keep checking the Collectors Figures section in the hopes I'll find they've added that skeleton of yours, and of course I've been waiting for an Orc to show up there too.

Its kind of funny that they never did make any announcement when they added that skeleton dog to the lineup.

And with Dwarf Hold 2, Elves vs Orcs, being officially announced in today's newsletter, there will soon be much buying.

Edit: another Orc week announced for next week. I'm hoping it'll be one of the stronger army weeks, as a couple of them have been rather disappointing this year.

I am not too sold on the head on the Greatax Orc pictured in the newsletter, and the axe not fitting straight into the hand looks a bit shoddy. Yet I love the head of the Greatax  seen in the banner on top of the newsletter, the same head in the entire unit it is then.

It also says that Dwarf King's Hold is about to sell out, has it always been a splash release?

Title: Re: Mantic News and Rumour Roundup
Post by: Darsc Zacal on May 13, 2011, 09:54:29 pm
I recently read of a hint on closing open hands around a weapon. As I recall it was just to apply  plastic glue to the hands, allowing them to slightly soften, and then gently bend them around the shaft of the weapon.

I've tried something similar in the past. I think it should work as long as one is careful.

The head didn't bother me. Figures with it can always be placed in the center of the unit where they will be less noticable.

The one head that I really can't stand is the one in the top hat. That won't be used in my army unless I come up with a way to modify it.

I just like the overall vibe of the Orcs. I hope sales are strong so that they will release more units in the furture with unique sculpts.

Regarding Dwarf Kings hold, I imagine since it includes cardboard tiles, Mantic had to order a specific quantity from the printers for it's first run. If it's proven successful I don't see why Mantic couldn't arrange for a second printing run.

Very excited about DKH 2. Rules for missile fire should make things even more interesting hopefully but dependant on how it is implemented.

As for the Greatax Orcs... I reckon they look the business. The head does look a little weird, a bit too smiley for my likings but thats not a huge issue for me. What I am hoping for is some closed hands on the sprue so that they dont all have to be holding their weapons two handed but rather some can have them resting on their shoulders or touching the ground.

As for the lacklustre army weeks... Wholeheartedly agree. Some of the past ones sucked big time even more so when you are waiting around till midnight-1am over here to see what the newest blog update is just to see it be another painted example. I'd prefer to see sprue closeups and maybe some cool looking conversion/kit bash examples.

Of course, the bad news is that statement is generally intended as an insult from people who don't like either.

A recent thread was interesting... a few people changed their mind about the orcs after I showed them the new paintjob... that stupid goggle-eyed initial paintjob from mantic did a lot of damage, it made people picture them as stupid and goofy. Too late to change it now, Mantic put a banner up on Warseer with the ugly paintjob for a whole month.

They really *really* need to work on getting their presentation right. The first time. Not 2 months later after the general public thinks the models suck. It makes it really hard for me to even attempt to present mantic as an attractive option to other gamers if all I have to work with are pics with sucky paintjobs.

The Elves, Undead and Dwarfs had great paintjobs, but after that it all went massively hit-or-miss.

I'm not saying Golem are bad, I just think they're still in the process of figuring out how to paint a model so that it looks good for photography. A lot of people dislike GW's eavy metal style, but forget that it does a really good job of doing what it's supposed to.. showing off the detail on the sculpts.

The abyssal dwarf vote for the paint scheme was a good idea. In that case both of the test schemes looked good so it didn't make much difference. With the orcs it would have made a massive difference.

Feedback on the abyssal characters worked well too.

Still it could be worse... I think wargames factory has just about the most atrocious presentation in the entire industry at this point.

Yeah, I'm still recovering from the sheer crapness of the shock trooper packaging.  They could have just scribbled 18 shocktroopers on the box and it would have been more presentable.

As for the painting, I'm sure Mantic have the resources to generate multiple paintjobs for new models.  Painter's Circle springs to mind...   :P

That does happen a lot... However, I did notice in the Chaos Dwarf Forgeworld thread a lot of people were saying that the Mantic ones were much better than what Forgeworld had come up with, which was a great sign. Of course there were still those who disliked Mantic ones, but you can't please everybody.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of Orc week this week, Nightsword! It must be almost time for Tuesday's post, right?

In other news, I am seeing a lot of people asking about or talking about the rumoured Mantic sci-fi range. I wonder if it is getting anywhere near close to an announcement? Now would almost be a perfect time to strike and add it to a market full of people desperate to jump off GW onto something better. It will be very difficult to live up to the heights of 40k though to be honest.

Well, from that thread I see a lot more people hating them than liking them. But then it is Warseer. :P

Including this wonderful little comment:

Quote
Yes, the Abyssal Dwarfs are cheap, but taking a **** is free and the end result looks better than those Mantic models.

Anyway, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to gouge my eyes out with a spoon and wash my optic nerves with bleach.

The funny thing is this guy also mentions that he really wants to buy chaos dwarves, but can't afford forge world. So, the cognitive dissonance of "want but can't have" (combined with a massive sense of self-entitlement) results in rage directed towards mantic for not being exact clones of forgeworld for a quarter of the price... without taking into account the fact that mantic is making models for it's own game system now primarily, with GW compatibility being an added bonus.

I get the feeling we'll be seeing a lot more hissy fits the more GW puts their prices up... will try my best not to respond to any blatant trolling that appears on warseer.

Title: Re: Mantic News and Rumour Roundup

I think its because the photos of Abyssal Dwarfs aren't particularly good. I had to look at a lot closely before I started to like them, the photo and/or paintjob doesn't really highlight the details in the correct way unfortunately.

You can't please everyone, but really I think harsh comments like that are just uncalled for. On the internet people seem to forget that it is human beings that have spent hours working on these models. If it was an amatuer job in a thread on warseer I bet there would be hardly any negative comments on the same models, and certainly none as harsh as that. You need a pretty hard shell to display any personal work in the public domain..

A couple of comments.. That orc is married?!? I saw the ring. I wonder what the lovely orcet is like.
Secondly, I have preordered the orc army deal, can I have the sprues that the orc licked in the video please? :D

Darsc will be pleased to see the Orc 3-up is now available to order! I have now put in my order for the big army deal of Orcs, the 3-up, and the 3-up undead dog finally. Really looking forward to this lot, everything is looking great so far!

Darsc is very pleased. ;D

Although I was sorta hoping the 3up might have been of a GreatAx.

Orc and one of the square bases is ordered. I already had the first Orc Army Deal on preorder. I'll have to wait till after my vacation to order that other army deal with the Gores.

Now I have to watch that Orc video I've been Reading about.

EDIT: Watched the video and I've mixed feelings about it.

I get that it's all in good fun and all that, but I also think it's a little, okay a lot, over the top. It comes across as gloating over GW's recent business decisions. The mask, the Waaagh, smashing the Wahammer Orc... It's all a bit too childish for me. I preferred Mantics previous more subtle, humourous, and intelligent cuts and jabs at GW than this ORC-HAMMER-SMASH approach.

I laughed at the video (especially when he started licking the box), but it does kinda fail on account of the fact that that's actually a mantic orc being smashed, not a GW one. ;)

Fair enough if it gets the point across I guess, who the hell would want to buy a GW orc?!?

I liked it. Mantic inject some humour into the hobby which GW seem to have forgotten about.

Lots on the Blog today.  Turn 8, metal price rises...

Interesting. The fact that Mantic cannot go all resin suggests that the cost and time for the resin casting is indeed significant, despite cheaper shipping and cheaper material. If Mantic has been able to justify and afford converting some kits to resin and doubling the amount of models, I wonder what the biggest barrier is? A fact of number of sales per sculpt maybe?

Title: Re: Mantic Fantasy & General News & Rumour Roundup
Post by: Darsc Zacal on June 02, 2011, 05:49:09 am
Mantic makes a limited number of their miniatures in restic, of which, as far as I've heard, are all of very good quality castings.

GW rushes their casting procedure in order to transfer a large number of their miniatures from metal to restic... And they have poor casting quality problems coming out of their waazoo.

I think that's probably your answer right there. If one wants quality, one just can't be rushed.

Well, the labour costs are higher for resin (moulds need replacing more regularly, something like 40 casts per mould compared to 300 for metal), and you need highly skilled staff to do it to a high standard.

So, I guess it's a case of mantic having a few staff members working on this (or an external freelancer, which is the usual way they like to do things) and there being limited room to hire more staff or buy more facilities to support a larger operation at this point.

I assume there would be nothing stopping them from making a full switch in the future, if funds allow... at this point funds probably don't allow for it what with so many other different projects on the go that are set for release this year (Dwarf kings hold design and printing, KoW goblins/dark elves/humans, Warpath).

I'm optimistic that we'll see an increased rate of resin plastic releases in future.. dwarf kings hold selling out is a good sign, that means they should have recuperated their expenses on the first print run, so when the second print run goes on sale it'll be all profit.

There really aren't all that many metal miniatures left anyway. Characters and Monsters can stay metal because you don't need whole units of them. as for everything else...

Undead - There aren't any metal units! Neat.

Orcs - No 100% metals, either. Morax can easily be converted from a mix of plastic Ax / GreatAx. Hoping fight wagons and/or chariots are on the "to do" list for eventual plastic or resin plastic too..

Dwarfs - Ironguard. These should have been a hybrid kit from the start, they're currently too expensive and don't look much different to the ironclads.. good resculpt target, IMO. Berserkers - No big deal, AoW stepped in here.

Abyssals - Hybrids are fine, berserkers.. see AoW again. Halfbreeds, could use resin (and an actual release, I'd still like to be able to buy these seperately).

Elves - probably best left until last unfortunately. Drakon Riders and Stormwind Cav are not the best of models and would probably need a resculpt before switching to resin. Palace Guard should be the #1 target for conversion here. Excellent models that you do need whole units of.

So, if we pick 3 or so units to go resin, one from each of the armies that need it, that results in: Dwarf Ironguard, Abyssal Halfbreeds, Elf Palace Guard.

Another bonus of doing Halfbreeds in resin plastic is that the bodies are the same as the immortal guard.. so potential there for a plastic/ resin plastic hybrid being released for that unit too.

Lots of exciting stuff out of the turn 8 show.

The only thing I am not excited about is the Twilight Kin hybrids... the pictures we have seen before were not very exciting!

Finally watched the Turn 8 show and was very pleased with some of Mantic announcements. The only thing I did not like was the show itself... It's a pity they can't add chapters in the video so you can just go straight to what you wanted to see.

Quickly OT.. did those Beasts of War guys ever do another table building series?
The first one they did was not too bad really...

Hmmm, the potential to organise a bunch of gamers around a webcam and talk **** whilst swigging Buckie out of a **** bottle...

Could be a winning formula.  Actually, it sounds like our game nights.  Except for the webcam...

Drinking with ones buddies, yapping about gamestuff etc is great. Watching a bunch of people drinking and straying off topic, talking over each other, and the person they're interviewing, is not so much fun and gets annoying and tiresome real fast.

Have you ever been a designated driver? And had to stay sober while the rest of your buddies were drinking. It turns out most people aren't as funny or coherent when they're drunk as they think they are. Sure it can provide some entertainment fodder for a little while, but as I said, it gets old fast.

Many years ago, when I was the only one in my group with my own car...

When I'm sober, drunk people annoy me, when I'm drunk...  I annoy sober and drunk people.   :P

Mantic has released a press release through TableTop Gaming News.

http://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/2011/06/11/47432/comment-page-1/#comment-64000

Short story; Mantic will be releasing Metal Hero miniatures on individual blisters this July.

Slight longer story; These will be new sculpts based on existing minis. Although I can't spot the differences from the first 4 photos shown on TGNs site. However on Monday a new metal Orc Hero will be unveiled. There is also a sixth mystery blister that will be unveiled later. I'm guessing it will be of whichever army will be released next... Goblin, Evil Elves, or Humans. That's just speculation on my part though.

Er, Darsc, it says 'combining the most popular heroes from the Kings of War range with brand new sculpts unique to the blisters.' which means the initial 4 are the current sculpts (most popular heroes) and will be joined by new sculpts.

 ;D

Some here may have seen these already, but for those that haven't, Mantic is releasing a new Collectors Figure as well as some new metal miniatures on blisters.

Some previously released miniatures, like Mhorgoth, are also going to be released on blisters. The two pictures here however are new sculpts. Although it has been pointed out that the krudger appears to be a modified sculpt of the previously released krudger bannerman.

I have read of people raging about the price opf the blisters etc but I for one am happy with their release. It allows Mantic to get more visibility in shops etc which can only increase sales. More sales will mean more and quicker releases which is fine by me.

Plus exclusive sculpts are good too.

That Krudger looks good... may need to get me one of those!

No, I haven't updated the first post roundups yet, but I do have a few things to share with those  that aren't yet subscribed to Mantics Newsletter.

Mantics latest Newsletter talks about some great, but very limited army deals on undead, dwarfs, and elves if anyone wants to expand or start their army.

http://www.manticgames.com/Shop-Home/Sale/Special-Army-Deals.html?utm_source=Mantic+Games+Newsletter&utm_campaign=9eb5f05a7c-Mantic_Games_Newsletter_130&utm_medium=email (http://www.manticgames.com/Shop-Home/Sale/Special-Army-Deals.html?utm_source=Mantic+Games+Newsletter&utm_campaign=9eb5f05a7c-Mantic_Games_Newsletter_130&utm_medium=email)

I'm very happy to see Mantics store is now selling Renendra's Tombstone and Barrel sets.

http://www.manticgames.com/Shop-Home/Paints-and-Hobby/Scenery.html (http://www.manticgames.com/Shop-Home/Paints-and-Hobby/Scenery.html)

There's also a great deal on a 10 mini set of Hasslefrees female combat soldier set as well as a hobby supply bag deal full of paints, brushes, dice and more.

I see another Mantic order being placed in my very near future.  ;D

Today Ronnies blog was mostly about Mantics plan for the KoW ruleset. However near the end he made the following comment;

"We also have a very interesting announcement coming soon, about how we will be engaging with the community going forward and doing something no major gaming company has done before!!"

I've no good idea what's meant by this. Anyone have any thoughts?

On another note, I've updated the first post roundup with the info from yesterdays blog about the plastic goblin archers, new undead unit, and the announcement of upcoming restic releases for the Abyssal Dwarfs.

Do you know if they are going to be plastic plastic or resin plastic?  Big or small? And how many do you plan on buying when they are released?
