Title: gaarew's huge log of Mantic madness...
Post by: gaarew on January 16, 2011, 10:07:11 am
Right, well, in a bid to keep everything together...

I have a problem.  I am a miniature addict.  I cannot stop myself from buying shitloads of minis whenever I get paid.  I will probably never get around to painting them all, but I'll give it a try.  Honest.

So, the huge backlog of unpainted doom needs to be catalogued, so that I can keep track of exactly what I need to do.

I'll stick that in the next post to make it easier to update.

I'll also consider taking requests.

And here are some recent shots to keep you lot happy for the time being...

Mhorgoth's Revenge box set contents raring to go

Ghouls - still to add gore

Skeleton Unit

Balefire Catapult and Crew

Zombies - still to add gore

And Mhorgoth himself on suitably impressive diorama base.

Hopefully I'll have the Revenants finished in the next few days.  I hope the weather gets a bit better soon, I have a whole bunch of stuff I can prime.

Revenants are done.

And 2 units of Wraiths.  Feels a bit strange to paint something that isn't doused entirely with Devlan Mud when it is finished...

That puts me at 78 minis so far this month (and year...), so, 22 more to hit 100 for January.

Should be do-able.  :D

The sheer amount of stuff you have thereis ridiculous. So ridiculous infact that I can only respect you the more for it  :D

I thought I had a lot of Mantic but now I cry for the once held pride I had in my collection :'(

By the way all those minis look great!
Do you have a gaming surface to match?

I imagine the backlog will only get worse as I try my best to stop buying GW models (except for my Ogre army), so, that respect will just have to keep growing too.   ;D

You should probably still take pride in your own collection dude.  The magnitude of mine is generally seen to be viewed in a different scale than mere mortals, like, compared to the LGS collection, or the Mantic warehouse...

I do have two RoB boards squirreled away for when we move to a bigger house and I don't have to share the gaming lair with tumble driers and laundry piles...  Only one section is painted though...

How do you go about doing your gore?
Looks awesome!

Cheers.   ;D

The blood is a pretty simple trick I picked up many years ago on the Forum of Doom, by someone who was very possible called Lonewolf (or something similar).  The trick is to varnish the models before adding the gore.  I've just started double varnishing my models, first with GW Purity seal, then a 2nd coat of Army Painter Matt Varnish to tone them down again.

To get the blood looking right you need; water, Tamiya Clear Red acrylic paint (TCR) and brown or black ink.  The GW washes ARE NOT INK!  If you can't get P3 or GW ink, try Windsor & Newton artists inks.

1.  Apply straight TCR to the area you want to create the blood effect.

2.  Wait about a minute, then apply a mix of TCR and water.

3.  Wait about another minute, add TCR and brown ink.

4.  A minute later, add TCR, brown ink and water mix.

You will find that adding the ink to the TCR makes it go kinda tacky, and the colour really darkens.  The key is to make sure the mix looks realistic.  My missus has, on more than one occasion, freaked out after coming into the games room and seeing the mix on my palette, thinking I've done myself a serious injury.  For added 'chunkiness' add some PVA glue to stage 3, as it goes clumpy and looks like chunks of congealed blood.

Cool. Cheers for that, I'll no doubt be using that one myself!

Oops, forgot to post this update....   :P

Original 10 Ghouls gorified

10 more Ghouls

Full Ghoul Regiment

Zombies all bloodied up

So, that takes me to 90 models done this month, onto 10 Skeleton Spearmen to hit the 100 mark.

Certainly did!
Did not realise those were your minis until I read this post. I think it was the background that threw me off!
The pictures on mantic make your army look even better than on here and thats an achievement :)

Sooo... when will they be showcasing your other armies?

So, my output for February so far = 1... (But an impressive 350 points nevertheless)

I will be the first to admit that I have neither the skill, patience or time to do OSL, so, it is a few highlights and that is it.  I went for a kinda Drow colouration on the Elf corpses, coupled with a maritime blue, that I imagine will be carried over to any living ones I paint.

I will endeavour to get better lit pictures as soon as possible.

Hey there!

I've been offline/not had chance to0 paint for a bit.

Great new take on Mhorgoth :D really menacing :) OSL is time consuming!

And, frankly, those zombies are just plain scary!! :D

Glad you like them.

30 was easy.

120 was more time consuming...

Still, 151 minis done this month.

And I might have something very special for my next update.   ;)

You sir are insane!

Thats a lot of zombies... how much time did you actually spend painting them?
Do you paint in big long sessions or do lots of smaller sessions?

And the verdegis on the Abyssal Dwarfs look sweet.

Ooooh, compliments  :P

Ehm, to be honest, I don't really know.  An hour or so here and there, and a few hours whilst pissing about online at night.  New baby has shifted painting regime about a bit.  Being off work helps too.

They weren't all painted in one go, but in 2 batches of 60.  I spray primed them, couple of washes on the skin, and then painted the bases, which was the worst part.  Then I went over the full unit, did all the scabs/cuts/guts, then picked out the bone, then eyes and hair.  Then I sorted them out into lines dependant on body and leg combo, and did each row with 1 of 3 colours (green, 2 browns), then washed them again, then did the grass.  Then finished with the gore.

Each stage probably took 1-2 hours, but that also included fag and coffee breaks, separating squabbling siblings, browsing the net.

Basically 60 done over a 4 day period.  Twice.

Yeah, I got lucky getting my hands on the Abyssal Dwarfs, seemingly my army deal hasn't even shipped yet...

You sir, are a madman. Although, if I ever take a trip to the Northern Colonies, I'll have to pop in to see them finished!!
